George Eastman House and Rochester Museum & Science Center

George Eastman House

The George Eastman House is a museum dedicated to the history of photography and film. Attached to the museum is George Eastman’s mansion with several rooms open to the public.

Guided tours are available for both the mansion and the museum.

While the adults in our group appreciated the camera and photo galleries in the museum, our kids (4 and 1) got bored quickly.

This is probably not the place for families with toddlers and young children to visit as the rooms are roped off and camera collections are encased in glass.

This museum is geared more towards film and photography buffs and families with older children.

Rochester Museum & Science Center

The Rochester Museum & Science Center offers three floors of hands-on exhibits for kids.

It is a relatively small museum and science center compared to the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto.

The Rochester Museum & Science Center is part of the ASTC and members receive discounts on admission here.

I would recommend making a visit to the museum and science center if you have young children and a few hours to spare in the morning or afternoon. When we visited on Saturday morning, it wasn’t very busy and went through all the exhibits under 3 hours.

  • This would be a great place for a couple of hours with young children. Love the roller coaster.

  • I can see why kids would prefer the Science Center over the Photography museum! Those gardens are very beautiful!

    • The gardens weren't open to the public during our visit but I can only imagine how beautiful it looks once it does!

  • I can see my nephew going to town in the Rochester Museum. I love hands-on exhibits, for kids and adults.

  • What great museums! I can see why your kids would be bored. After awhile, I think my kids would be too. I like the How Things Work area. My kids would love the Rochester Museum & Science Center a whole lot more though. I can spend some time at that mansion. BTW, I love the new look and logo of your blog.

    • Both museums are great for families but probably not geared towards the same age group.

Thanks! I like it too :) Excited to see you soon!

  • I know it's a miniature roller coaster, but is it based on a real one? It looks so scary!

    • Good question Ann. I don't think it is based on a real roller coaster but I didn't spend too much time reading the sign ;) Just kept watching the coaster run on the track

  • We'd definitely have a blast at the The Rochester Museum & Science Center, although the George Eastman House may not be our thing.

  • My kind of place to visit love the pictures and being able to visit through your eyes - visiting from Photo Thursday
